Lesson Objectives: Students will learn about Parrots and how they can learn to speak human language. We will use oil pastels and paint to create parrot artwork.

Essential Questions: Where do Parrots live? How do they learn to repeat our language and sounds? What lines, colors, and shapes do we need to draw parrots?

Materials Needed: White paper, pencils, oil pastels, watercolors

Intro: Show two short videos about how parrots learn to talk like us.

Vocabulary: Parrot, language, repetition, southern hemisphere, parakeet, cockatiel, foliage

Procedure: (direct instruction, guided practice, independent practice, summary)

Students will watch a science video about parrots learning to repeat our language and sounds. We will look at images of the parrot family and see where they live on a global map.

Students will follow along with me to draw a parrot perched on a tree branch surrounded by foliage.

Students will then trace all of their pencil lines with oil pastels and then paint their artwork using watercolors.

Last 5 minutes will consist of clean up and review of lesson. Exit Slip: What facts do you know or want to know about parrots?

Learning Accommodations: Challenge students to add more details based on their drawing and artistic abilities. Offer shapes/ templates to trace for students who need extra help.

Learning Extensions: Find out more about parrots. Write 5 interesting facts about them.

Assessment: Visually assess student understanding of the assignment. Did the student complete the work?
