2016-2017 School Year

Veterans Memorial Middle School

6th Grade Syllabus

Course Description: In Accelerated Mathematics 6/7A, instructional time should focus on six critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking; (5) developing understanding of and applying proportional relationships; (6) developing understanding of operations with rational numbers and working with expressions and linear equations.

Goals: The 6-8 standards are organized using domains, overarching ideas that connect topics across the grades, clusters that illustrate progression of increasing complexity from grade to grade, and standards which define what students should know and be able to do at each grade level. These standards include skills and knowledge – what students need to know and be able to do, as well as mathematical practices – habits of mind that students should develop to foster mathematical understanding and expertise.
