Course Goals

  1. Learn and develop technical and musical skills of stringed instrument playing.
  2. Cultivate the lifelong appreciation of music.

 

Materials

Orchestra students are expected to bring their music folder and a pencil to class every day. Students will also need book 1, 2, or 3 from the Müller-Rusch method series. 

Students can sign up in class to purchase a book for $5

 

Course Description

All Orchestra activities in which students participate is intentionally planned to reinforce the course goals. The majority of class time will be spent learning the technical skills required to read and perform music of various styles on our instruments. Another goal is to give students a foundational understanding in basic music theory, history, and listening skills to develop and promote a lifelong involvement, support, and appreciation of music.

 

Expectations

In orchestra, we highly value order and respect. Be on time, focused, and hard-working. Food and drink is not allowed in the classroom. Cell phones should be silent and out of sight at all times unless used with permission. School property, including school instruments and music, is to be treated with great care. Students observed mishandling their loaned instruments will forfeit the use of the instruments and be required to pay for any damages. Please refer to the BRMS Student Handbook for additional school policies.

Grading

Weekly Participation - 10%

Concert Participation - 20%

Playing Tests & Quizzes - 30%

Written Tests & Quizzes - 30%

Journal Entries - 10%

 

Orchestra Communications

I will communicate with parents regularly via email. Please make sure you are receiving orchestra emails! Additionally, I use the Canvas system to post upcoming assignments, events, and orchestra reminders.

 

Participation Grades                                                      

Students will be given a weekly participation grade based on their effort and preparedness. Students who          receive a 10/10 meet class expectations and demonstrate positive attitudes toward teachers and other students. BRMS Orchestra students have many performance opportunities each year. *Required events are marked with a star*.Participation in these concerts is mandatory and is graded. Students will receive a grade based on their presence, timeliness, appropriate dress, and behavior at concerts.

After School Rehearsals

In preparation for concerts and performances, after school rehearsals may be scheduled to rehearse with  combined classes. These rehearsals will be scheduled in a timely manner and student participation is required.

 

Syllabus Quiz - Due Friday, August 24th

 

 Students must complete the following for full credit on the quiz

 

●       Return the signed portion of this syllabus with parent and student signatures

●       Purchase an Orchestra Method Book from Mr. Campbell for $5

●       Return the MCSD Informational packets (in orange envelopes)

●       Answer quiz questions regarding class policies and expectations
