Description (s):

In Grade 6, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) connecting ratio and rate to whole number multiplication and division and using concepts of ratio and rate to solve problems; (2) completing understanding of division of fractions and extending the notion of number to the system of rational numbers, which includes negative numbers; (3) writing, interpreting, and using expressions and equations; and (4) developing understanding of statistical thinking.

Goals:

The Georgia Mathematics Curriculum focuses on actively engaging the students in the development of mathematical understanding by using manipulatives and a variety of representations, working independently and cooperatively to solve problems, estimating and computing efficiently, and conducting investigations and recording findings. In mathematics classrooms, students will learn to think critically in a mathematical way with an understanding that there are many different ways to a solution and sometimes more than one right answer in applied mathematics. Mathematics is the economy of information. The central idea of all mathematics is to discover how knowing some things well, via reasoning, permit students to know much else—without having to commit the information to memory as a separate fact. It is the connections, the reasoned, logical connections that make mathematics manageable. As a result, implementation of the Georgia Standards of Excellence places a greater emphasis on problem solving, reasoning, representation, connections, and communication.

Extra Credit:  I allow students to redo most classwork and homework for a better grade, therefore, extra credit will be given at the discretion of the teacher. Extra credit will be considered if and only if all assignments are completed and turned in.

Homework:  Home work is extremely important as it reinforces the content taught that day. Failure to do homework will result in academic detention and other consequences to make sure the work is completed. Zeros aren’t permitted!

Notebook:  Interactive Student Notebook (ISN) will be utilized this school year. Student notebooks will be kept in the classroom. Notebooks can be taken home to help with homework or study for a test. It is very important that the notebooks are brought back to school.

Student Workbook: Go Math! Student workbook will be issued for student use. This workbook can be written in and is expected to be in class every day. Therefore, if your child loses the book, he/she is responsible to print student pages from my.hrw.com to keep up with any homework or classwork that is given.
