8th Grade Language Arts Class

2018-2019

 Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

 Welcome to 8th grade! This year will be great! As you enter your last year of middle school, you will be presented many opportunities that will both challenge and prepare you for high school and beyond. I am excited to help get you ready for whatever future adventures your life may hold. Our work in this class will be rigorous and rewarding, and yes, we will have fun. Success in this classroom is attainable for all students, and I pledge to do whatever it takes to ensure you are given the opportunity to attain academic success. I have heard it said that knowledge is power, but without the ability to clearly communicate, all the knowledge in the world is useless.  Using language effectively to communicate while speaking, writing, reading, and listening is real power and what we will strive towards this year. 

Methods of Instruction: Students will be engaged in the learning process by:

  • Individual exploration and research
  • Group lectures and discussions
  • Small group team oriented activities
  • Hands-on activities such as projects and portfolio work
  • Oral presentations
  • Written compositions  

Expectations: 

  1. Enter class everyday possible with a POSITIVE attitude, ready to share your intelligence. Be seated quietly and begin the Smart Start
  2. Conduct yourself as the SCHOLAR you are. Speak academically and think critically.
  3. Be PRESENT. Come to class on time, prepared with completed assignments, necessary materials, texts, handouts, or notes.
  4. Behave in a manner that exhibits PRIDE and a sense of OWNERSHIP for your own SUCCESS. Every assignment and every class contribution should be a reflection of the pride you take in YOUR education.
  5. GROW as an independent and responsible student. You are responsible for YOU.
  6. Follow all the school rules. Respect yourself, classmates, teachers, school personnel, as well as the rights and property of others.

7.* Write down your homework in your agenda book/daily planner. 

Grading- 65% Summative Assessments 35% Formative Assessments/*Late work that is not excused will receive a 65. It is the student’s responsibility to obtain make up work from the teacher.   

Language Arts Notebook- Keeping a well-organized notebook is a necessity. Students will need a 2 inch notebook. The ELA notebook will have 6 sections: 1.) Smart Start 2.) Literature 3.) Grammar 4.) Writing 5.) Vocabulary 6.) Language Labs

*We will go to the media center as a whole class every two weeks. Students may also go to the media center on their own with permission if they have a pass and their library card. (Student I.D.)  

Extra Credit- Extra credit will be given at my discretion to the entire class, not to individual students. 

*I have read and understand the grading procedures and classroom expectations in Language Arts class. I am committed to helping my child ensure that he/she achieves success according to these standards and will utilize Parent Portal, Canvas, Remind, student agenda, email and other provided tools to help monitor my child’s academic progress and maintain parent-school communication. 

* This handout is to be kept in the very front of your ELA notebook for future reference.
