ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY LAB SAFETY RULES

Proper safety instructions will be given for all equipment, machine, tools and procedures used by the student. Failure to follow these rules can result in accidents and/or harm to students. Consequences for dangerous behavior or not following the safety rules can include student disciplinary action.

Do not use any equipment unless you are trained and approved as a user by your teacher.
Do not participate in horseplay or careless behavior.
Perform no unauthorized experiments or tasks.
Perform assigned experiments and tasks only according to directions.
Do not to bring food, gum, or drinks into the lab.
Never begin working or using tools or machines without permission.
Keep all tools/materials out of your pockets. Do not put anything in your mouth.
Ask the teacher for assistance if you are in doubt as to the safe operation of any tool or machine,
Report all accidents to the teacher immediately.
Report all broken tools and equipment to the teacher immediately.
Wear safety glasses/goggles while using machinery and as directed by your teacher.
Know the location of the "Emergency Shut-Off" switches, as well as exits and fire extinguishers.
Keep aisles clear at all times.
Never point a parting tool (scissors, screwdriver, x-acto knife, etc.) towards yourself or others.
When using anything with a blade, never place your fingers directly in front of the blade.
Hold x-acto knives like a pencil, rest your hand on the cutting board/mat and use a wide straight edge as a cutting guide. Do not rush your cut.
Return all tools to the teacher immediately after use. Never leave an x-acto knife or other tool unattended.
Carry x-acto knives and other tools with the blade or sharp part down.
Use all glue properly. Do not play with liquid glue or glue guns.
Use gloves when operating glue gun. Keep fingers, etc. away from the hot tip and hot glue. Place glue gun on a paper plate when not in use.
Always completely close liquid glue containers and clean up any spills immediately.
Keep all work areas clean and neat.
Do not throw unused materials on the floor where someone else might slip.
Clean up all spilled liquids immediately (water, hot glue, white glue, etc.)
Place all scraps in the proper location immediately after using.
When using power tools or machinery:

Always keep machine guards properly adjusted; never remove a guard from any machine.
Sleeves must be rolled up above the elbows.
All jewelry such as rings, watches, bracelets, etc., must be removed.
No loose or dangling jewelry (necklaces/neck chains) or hair (tie back long hair).
Loose or baggy clothing such as ties, coats, sweatshirts or sweaters are prohibited.
Always stand 3 feet or more away when not operating a stationary power tool.
Know where the shut off switch is before turning on the machine.
Don’t force any material into any machine or power tool. Don’t force any type of tool into any material.
All machine guards must be in the proper position before the machine is put into operation.
Never walk away from a machine or power tool and leave it running (on).
