You are about to begin one of the largest independent projects you will complete this year.

Before that sentence causes anyone to panic, there is something important you need to know:

You are NOT supposed to complete a Science Fair project all at once.

A good Science Fair project is built one piece at a time. Your new Science Fair Student Packet is designed to walk you through those pieces in order, from “What in the world should I investigate?” all the way to “My project is finished and ready for the judges.”

“What am I supposed to do now?”

🚦Work in Order!

The packet is divided into sections for a reason.

You will see checkboxes, CHECKPOINTS, CAUTION warnings, SCIENCE CHECKS, and STOP signs along the way. Use them!

Especially the STOP signs.

A STOP sign does not mean:

"I am an Honors student, so surely this doesn't apply to me."

It also does not mean:

"I was only going to experiment a tiny bit..."

It means STOP. 🛑

Some Science Fair projects require approval before experimentation begins. Starting too early can create serious problems for an otherwise excellent project.

📅 Your Major Deadlines

Project Idea: Friday, September 18
Preliminary Proposal: Friday, September 25
Official Forms: Friday, October 2
Abstract: Friday, November 20
Complete Project Turn-In: Friday, December 4
ACMS Science & Engineering Fair: Monday, December 7

There are weeks between some of those dates, but don't be fooled. Experiments take time. Plants refuse to consult Canvas calendars. Equipment misbehaves. Materials disappear. Trials fail. Dogs eat things. Parents accidentally throw away things that apparently looked exactly like garbage.

Begin each stage early.

🧪 One More Important Thing

The goal of Science Fair is not to prove your hypothesis correct.

The goal is to conduct good science.

Your hypothesis might be supported. It might not be supported. Your results might surprise you completely.

That's okay.

Scientists don't get to tell Nature what answer they would prefer.

Your job is to design the best investigation you can, collect honest evidence, and figure out what that evidence tells you.

That is science.

Don't worry about December yet.

Right now, your first destination is simply:

Open the packet.

Start at the beginning.

Read the directions.

Start your logbook.

Begin wondering.

And then...

Do the next step well.
