Course Description

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language. It emphasizes the language skills of listening, reading, writing, and speaking. Students will learn to understand the Spanish language as it is spoken at a basic level and to communicate with simple verbal and written responses. Spanish sounds will be learned through imitation. Grammar and sentence structure will be taught in conjunction with thematic vocabulary units.  Topics will include el alfabeto, los saludos, la escuela, las comidas, la familia and los deportes. Culture and history of the Spanish-speaking world will be woven throughout the course to provide student with cross-cultural competencies.

Goals:

*Introduction to listening, reading, speaking, and writing in Spanish.

*Understand the cultural and historical framework of the Spanish-speaking world.

Grading:

Based on Total Points (not percent)

Classwork is based on the concept of EPIC - PASS which means: Engagement Practice Improvement Contribution - Participate And Speak Spanish.

 Everyone is expected to participate, volunteering answers and even being prepared when hands are not raised.

Speaking is an integral part of learning a language. Students will be encouraged to use Spanish in class as much as possible. Students will not be penalized for incorrect answers when speaking in class. Another valuable skill is listening attentively.   It is essential that students respect their classmates, and not talk “out of turn’. A positive attitude, a willingness to learn, and being prepared are also important.
