8th Grade Language Arts Class

2017-2018

 Dear Students and Parents,

Welcome to 8th grade! This year will be great! As you enter your last year of middle school, you will be presented many opportunities that will both challenge and prepare you for high school and beyond. I am excited to help get you ready for whatever future adventures your life may hold. Our work in this class will be rigorous and rewarding, and yes, we will have fun. Success in this classroom is attainable for all students, and I pledge to do whatever it takes to ensure you are given the opportunity to attain academic success. I have heard it said that knowledge is power, but without the ability to clearly communicate, all the knowledge in the world is useless.  Using language effectively to communicate while speaking, writing, reading, and listening is real power and what we will strive towards this year.

Reading is a critical component of success—not only in reading class, but in your other classes and in the work world. As with many skills, proficiency requires practice. It is extremely important that you have an independent reading book with you every day. You may bring your own book or check one out from the media center or the classroom library. No catalogs, please!

Writing well is a skill that will serve you throughout life—whether you do it with pen and paper, computer, or cell phone. We will write in a variety of modes, focusing on the six traits of good writing: ideas, organization, voice, word choice, sentence fluency, and conventions.

 Expectations:

  1. Enter class everyday possible with a POSITIVE attitude, ready to share your intelligence. Be seated quietly and begin the Smart Start
  2. Conduct yourself as the SCHOLAR you are. Speak academically and think critically.
  3. Be PRESENT. Come to class on time, prepared with completed assignments, necessary materials, texts, handouts, or notes.
  4. Behave in a manner that exhibits PRIDE and a sense of OWNERSHIP for your own SUCCESS. Every assignment and every class contribution should be a reflection of the pride you take in YOUR education.
  5. GROW as an independent and responsible student. You are responsible for YOU.
  6. Follow all the school rules. Respect yourself, classmates, teachers, school personnel, as well as the rights and property of others.

  7. Write down your homework in your agenda book/daily planner.

 Grading- Total Points Earned  x100

1-2 book projects will be required for each nine week grading period.

Extra Credit- Extra credit will be given at my discretion to the entire class, not to individual students.

*Parents, please check the school notes website for an outline of the daily class agenda, classwork/ homework, upcoming test and or projects, reading deadlines, due dates, upcoming project details, and deadlines, as well as other pertinent information.

* This handout is to be kept in the very front of your ELA notebook for future reference.

I am looking forward to a successful and happy year with your child in my class. J
