Curriculum Content SS6

Course Description: The major focus is on several important regions of the world: Europe, Latin America, the Caribbean, Canada, and Australia.

Procedures and Policies: Much of our class work will be done cooperatively and students are expected to learn and practice cooperative working skills throughout the year. Self-respect and respect for others is a requirement for this course and for each student’s individual success. ALL work should be the student’s own work. Any student who copies another student’s work, as well as the student who allowed the copying, will be given a grade of zero for that assignment. Also, when doing research, students must put information in their own words. Plagiarism results in a zero grade.

Interactive Student Notebook

In 6th grade Social Studies, an interactive notebook will allow for personal creativity, growth in the area of note-taking, research, and organizational skills, and connection to real world events through the use of technology in the classroom. With an emphasis on student engagement, rigorous activities that are student-driven, and opportunities for critical thinking, the goal is develop student growth in this class.

What is the purpose of the notebook?

The purpose of the interactive notebook is to enable you to be a creative, independent and reflective thinker and writer throughout the year. Interactive notebooks will be used for class notes as well as for other activities where you will be asked to express your own ideas and process and or apply the information and skills learned in this class. It also helps you review for end of course exams.

How will my notebook be graded?

Notebooks will be checked periodically as a daily grade and these checks may not be announced. All class notes and notebook assignments should be included, even for the days in which you were absent. This includes each being recorded in the table of contents. Each assignment must be complete, have a heading, and the date assigned or given written on it.   Mostly it is checked on being complete.

IN tests will also be given once per quarter.  You MUST use your IN to take the test!

How long should it take to work on my notebook?

Normally class time is given to work on assignments. The expectation is that you will revisit the assignment that evening or the next to review the material.

What happens if I am absent?

If you are absent, it is your responsibility to obtain notebook assignments from either a classmate or the teacher.

Each unit will have a posttest (which IS graded!) We will have one major project that will be completed outside of class per 9 weeks as well as mini projects.

What do we do in case of an emergency?

Tornado: Go in the hall, get on your knees facing the wall, put your head down, and remain silent.

Fire: Calmly go out the nearest exit with your teacher or attending adult, line up, and do not talk.

Lockdown: Get inside the nearest door, lock it, close blinds, and silently wait for clearance to resume the normal routine. If you are in the bathroom, stay there. Lock yourself in a stall and raise your feet.
